The Thanks We Get
The feeling of being appreciated is one that cannot be replaced easily, or subbed with another form. It’s something that really can hit you deep. Its just one of those things that makes you feel real good. Admit it, even the most hardcore of the hardcore will get all gooey and warm inside when you give them a good old fashioned straight from the heart thank you.
Then again there is the modern day version of the thank you. I believe many of us have been more than lucky enough to receive this version of the thank you. For that matter, I am also pretty sure many of us are just as guilty of giving it away.
This version of the thank you is normally accompanied by a number of tell tale signs. First would be the lack of eye contact, followed by the mumbling of a vague thank you which could easily be mistaken for a fuck you (not that I would be surprised) and sometimes it comes with a “who cares look” on the mutterers face. This is not exhaustive of course, its only a simple guideline. It could easily be accompanied by a host of other signs, but no fear, you would just as easily be able to identify it.
I used to work in the FnB line. It was a whole load of fun. Its something I would gladly take a pay cut to get back into. You see sometimes job and self satisfaction play a more important part in our happiness than monetary satisfaction. Anyways, I once had the chance to save an old man who was choking on a piece of steak.
While the old man was coughing away and turning blue, the rest of the family was panicking. Initially none of us at the outlet paid much attention thinking it was nothing. When it appeared that it could be more than that, I tried the Heimlich maneuver, or at least what I thought would be right based on what I had seen on the telly. Fortunately it worked. I felt good about it, but it would have been really great if the family had shown some form of thanks. Hey I am not talking about monetary nor was I doing it for the glory.
You see its all about appreciation. Think about it. The ball is round, what you pay forward, eventually comes around. Let those who serve, those who help, those who assist, those who are around, let everyone feel appreciated. I know I falter at this and that its easier said than done, but no harm putting in a little more effort now is there.
